And in the blink of an eye, we are staring down the final days of the summer season. The weather is going to go from the sweltering 90s to the cool and crisp 50s in no time.
While we transition almost seamlessly into the fall season, we have to keep in mind that our HVAC system is in need of a little TLC. With a few weeks in between the drop in temperatures, it is imperative for homeowners to get ahead of the game and start fall and winter maintenance for their HVAC systems.
Through some cautionary measures and routine preventative maintenance, homeowners can head into the winter months without having to worry about whether or not their HVAC system can make it through the season.
Start with the basics.
Check your air filters.
Depending on how long it has been since you last replaced it, you will have to either clean or replace your air filters. While it may not seem like it, cleaning and replacing your system’s air filter is one of the easiest ways to ensure you get the most out of your HVAC system. Dirty filters restrict airflow and severely reduces the overall efficiency of your system.
Important to note is that an air filter should not be changed only when it’s dirty. In fact, air filters should be replaced every 90 days and checked on a monthly basis.
It may also serve you well to clean your vents at the same time you are replacing the filters. Clean vents coupled with a clean air filter will only serve to increase efficiency and eliminate dust and debris.
Check the Thermostat.
When it gets cold, you will be rushing to the thermostat to get the heater going. The last thing you want is to find out your thermostat is not working for one reason or another while the temperature dips into the 50s.
Get a Professional HVAC Inspection.
The above items are relatively easy cautionary measures homeowners can do on their own. This however, does not mean homeowners should forego getting their system checked by a professional contractor.

An HVAC professional will check filters, electrical switches, contacts, belts, safety switches, refrigerant levels, motors, gas pressure, and safety switches.

Replace the HVAC System.
This is the last thing any of us want to deal with, but it is important to consider the age of your HVAC system. After so many years, maintaining begins to feel like a temporary solution. It’s no longer preventative, but just putting a band aid on.
In some cases, it will be obvious that the entire system should be replaced, in others, a professional should be able to help you determine when to replace.
